Arise, prayer-walk, and bring hope to your community this Spring
Arise and cover Sheffield in prayer.
Followers of Jesus across Sheffield will be using the Arise prayer-walking app to pray for streets near their home, school, or workplace during their daily walk.
The vision: to prayer-walk every street in Sheffield between 1-31 March 2021.
Local church groups are devising additional ways to share their faith with their communities.
Some groups are decorating Easter windows, delivering the gift of a ‘Real Easter Egg’ to nearby homes, or hosting an online discipleship course.
Arise Sheffield is sending an Easter card to every home in Sheffield.
The card will invite local people to watch a newly-made online video about the Gospel message, and followers of Jesus in Sheffield.
A walk of faith
In March, followers of Jesus throughout Sheffield will be taking on a mission to prayer-walk every street in the city, asking God to work for His glory here this year.
“The prophet Jeremiah summoned the exiled people of God to seek the welfare of their city and to pray to the LORD on its behalf. To be in exile is to be living in a situation we would not choose. How better then, to respond to the present pandemic than by taking up that ancient challenge, praying to the LORD for our city of Sheffield and by seeking its welfare in the coming months. Arise Sheffield provides us with that opportunity and I commend it to you — with confidence in the Gospel and joy in the Spirit.”
– Rt Revd Dr Pete Wilcox, Bishop of Sheffield
“There has never been a better time to share the hope of Jesus. It is a joy to see churches across Sheffield working together to prioritise prayer, sharing the gospel, and transforming the city! Arise not only presents us with an opportunity to step out of our comfort zones as followers of Jesus, but will begin to provide answers for every person asking, “Is there more to life?” It’s time for the church to rise up and our city to wake up!”
– Viki Seithel, Communications Developer, Fusion Movement
“The 19th century British poet, Alfred, Lord Tennyson wrote, ‘More things are wrought by prayer than this world ever dreamed of.’ Today, we are surrounded by the answers to prayers prayed in the past by us and others. Arise is a testimony in the streets of Sheffield to the power of prayer today. The Catholic community in Sheffield looks forward to being part of it. May the Lord who has begun this good work bring it to fulfillment.”
– Bishop Ralph Heskett, Bishop of Hallam
“Our God has a big missional vision to see all peoples and nations blessed and restored to relationship with Him. His promise to Abram was that through him all the nations of the earth will be blessed (Gen 12:3). This promise finds its fulfilment in Jesus our Saviour and the Saviour of the world. This vision to see our city blessed and its peoples have the opportunity to hear the Good News, fits right in with God’s Missional heart and purposes. emPower has been committed to regularly gathering Christians in Sheffield to pray for our city for over a decade and is excited to wholeheartedly commend this prayer walk and these missional opportunities to all Christians in our city.”
– Revd Dr Nike Adebajo, emPower Coordinator
“In Jesus’ wonderful ‘High Priestly Prayer’, in John 17, he prays for all who would become his disciples across the centuries, ‘That all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us that the world may believe that you have sent me… may they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them, even as you have loved me.” Arise Sheffield is a wonderful, inspiring and practical initiative, which can be part of The Father’s answer to The Son’s Prayer. I pray for any church of any denomination, stream or kind, that we will ARISE TOGETHER, in the power of The Spirit, and prayerfully show the people of Sheffield, that they are loved by The One who loves us.”
– Revd Clive Burnard, Regional Minister, Yorkshire Baptist Association
“Arise Sheffield is a really exciting initiative bringing together followers of the way from all across Sheffield to cry out for God’s kingdom to come on our streets and in homes throughout the city. What an amazing opportunity to join with our brothers and sisters to step out onto the streets across our city and claim back ground for God. “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (Eph 6:12). As we go, let’s be attentive to God’s unique call to each of us for how to serve our communities, and let’s be radically obedient in following that call.”
